Retaining walls in Vancouver, BC.

Vancouver's older residential neighbourhoods have some of the most varied retaining wall stock in the Lower Mainland, and as a retaining wall contractor in Vancouver we work across East Vancouver, Kerrisdale, Marpole, and South Vancouver regularly. The city's mix of pre-war homes, postwar bungalows, and modern infill means we encounter everything from 1960s dry-stack fieldstone walls to badly-installed timber walls to brand-new engineered designs. The City of Vancouver has its own permit process and its own engineering standards, and we know both. Heritage front-yard stone walls are something we take particular care with because they're part of what makes older Vancouver neighbourhoods look the way they do.

What we see in Vancouver

The local stuff that actually matters.

A lot of older Vancouver lots have cedar timber walls from the 60s and 70s that are well past their service life. Heritage front-yard stone walls need a careful taking-apart and a faithful rebuild.

Most of our calls in Vancouver come from homeowners around East Vancouver and Kerrisdale, plus Marpole. Whether you're building from scratch or replacing a wall that's leaning, the process is the same: walk the slope with you, check the drainage situation, figure out what's really going on, and give you an honest written quote.

East Vancouver's laneway house boom has created consistent retaining wall demand on rear lots where grade changes between the alley and the main house require a proper structure. The City of Vancouver is strict about property-line walls adjacent to laneways, and most require an engineered design and a building permit regardless of height. We handle the full package: engineering, permit submission, and construction. On heritage stone wall repairs, we work carefully to preserve the original character while addressing the structural and drainage issues underneath.

Common questions

Questions from Vancouver homeowners.

  • Yes, if your wall is over 1.2 metres (about 4 feet) tall. The City of Surrey requires an engineered design and a building permit for anything taller. Walls under 1.2 metres usually don't need a permit, but if your wall supports a driveway, a building, or sits near the property line, the city may still want to see drawings. We handle the whole permit process for you.
