Natural Stone Retaining Walls in Surrey, BC

What you need to know about natural stone.

Natural stone retaining walls, whether dry-stack or mortared, are a different kind of project from a segmental block build. A fieldstone wall, a basalt stack, or a heritage stone wall rebuild requires the installer to read the stone, fit each piece by hand, and think three-dimensionally. Stone garden walls, rock walls, and fieldstone retaining walls all refer to variations of the same craft. We've been laying natural stone for over a decade and we build walls that look like they grew out of the ground rather than were stacked next to it.

The main stone types we work with in the Lower Mainland are BC basalt, local fieldstone, and granite from Fraser Valley quarries. Basalt splits cleanly and has a consistent face colour. Fieldstone is what you find on older Surrey and White Rock properties, and it's what we use when we're repairing or rebuilding a heritage wall to match the original. Dry-stack stone walls breathe naturally and drain through the face, which is why well-built examples last 100-plus years. Mortared stone walls need proper drainage behind them the same as any other solid wall.

Heritage stone wall repair and rebuild is something we take particular care with. Many older homes across Vancouver, White Rock, and New Westminster have front-yard stone walls that were built in the 1950s and 60s and have significant character worth preserving. We carefully deconstruct, address whatever drainage failure caused the problem, and rebuild using the original stones and the same dry-stack or mortared method. The result should look like a well-maintained original, not a repair.

  • Optional landscape integration: planting pockets, lights, stairs
  • Site cleanup and a walkthrough with care notes

When you need this

A few situations where this is usually the right call.

You want character, not a cookie-cutter look

Natural stone is one-of-a-kind. No two walls look the same, which matters on a heritage or character home.

You're building a feature garden wall

Lower decorative walls, planter beds, and tree wells in natural stone elevate an entire front yard.

You want something that ages well

Block walls can fade or pick up algae. Good stone walls look better at 30 than they did the day we built them.

Common questions

Questions about natural stone.

  • Yes, if your wall is over 1.2 metres (about 4 feet) tall. The City of Surrey requires an engineered design and a building permit for anything taller. Walls under 1.2 metres usually don't need a permit, but if your wall supports a driveway, a building, or sits near the property line, the city may still want to see drawings. We handle the whole permit process for you.
