Boulder and armour stone retaining walls in Surrey, BC
When you've got real grade to manage, boulder walls do the work that block can't. We place one to four tonne armour stones with machine, key them into the slope, and back-drain them just like a built wall. Common on acreage, view lots, and any project where the scale calls for something heavier.

What you need to know about boulder walls.
Boulder retaining walls, also called armour stone walls or rip-rap walls depending on placement method, are the right tool when the grade change is larger than block handles efficiently or when the site calls for something with real visual weight. We place one-to-four-tonne granite and basalt boulders with our excavator, keying the base course into the excavated slope and stepping back each row as we climb. Machine-placed boulder walls move quickly on the right site and the finished structure looks permanent because it is. Unlike segmental block systems, there's no hardware, no adhesive, and no facing material to degrade.
Armour stone retaining walls are common on Panorama Ridge, in Cloverdale, on Langley acreage, and along Silver Valley hillsides in Maple Ridge, where total grade changes are large enough that block would require extensive geogrid engineering to reach the same height that two or three courses of boulders handle naturally. They're also our preferred approach for ravine-edge erosion control, paddock cuts, and driveway access walls where a large machine is already on site for the excavation portion of the project.
Boulder wall cost per linear foot is typically competitive with or lower than engineered segmental block on tall walls because the boulders carry the load without needing geogrid layers. We pick boulders at the quarry for shape and fit rather than ordering by the tonne and taking whatever gets delivered. That step makes the finished wall look intentional. Large rock retaining walls and granite retaining walls are other terms for the same scope. If you've had quotes from other contractors that include armour stone but you're uncertain about the spec, we're happy to look at what you've been given.
What's included
Every boulder walls job covers the same baseline. No upsells on the basics.
- Site access plan and machine staging (we work in tight spots)
- Boulder selection at the quarry, sized for your wall height
- Excavation, keyed-in base course, and compacted bedding
- Hand-fit placement with an excavator, not just stacked
- Drainage rock and weep gaps where the design needs them
- Soil back-fill, regrading, and seed or sod restoration
- Cleanup of access paths and yard restoration
When you need this
A few situations where this is usually the right call.
You have an acreage or view-lot grade change
Boulder walls handle bigger height changes than block. On Panorama Ridge, Crescent Beach, and South Surrey hillsides, they're often the right tool.
You want a natural, rugged look
Boulders read as part of the landscape, not as a built wall. Great with native planting and rural-feel properties.
You're protecting a driveway or building pad
Armour stone holds back serious soil pressure and doesn't fail the way a poorly-built timber or block wall can.
Why homeowners pick us for boulder & armour stone walls.

- Boulders hand-picked at the quarry for shape and fit

Need something different?
Questions about boulder walls.
Yes, if your wall is over 1.2 metres (about 4 feet) tall. The City of Surrey requires an engineered design and a building permit for anything taller. Walls under 1.2 metres usually don't need a permit, but if your wall supports a driveway, a building, or sits near the property line, the city may still want to see drawings. We handle the whole permit process for you.
